Grapes

Almost all the annual amount of more than 1000 tons of grapes handled by the company comes from the region of Pieria, with a smaller percentage from Corinth. The main varieties are Crimson Seedless and Thompson Seedless.

The bulk of production is absorbed by Great Britain and Holland. Protofanousi has immediate plans to double the amount it sells, with expansion into other, mainly European markets.  Apart from the famous Crimson and Thomson, PROTO has already collaborated with growers which planted new seedless table grapes varieties such as the white Sugar Crisp and red Jack's Salute by IFG and the white Arra 15, red Arra 19 and black Arra 32 by Grapa Varieties Ltd. These new varieties have a later harvest time window, have excellent storeability and of course look and taste amazing! Since 2019, these varieties are available to our customers!

Preservation tips for customer:

Grapes can be preserved in the refrigerator for a period of 10 to 15 days on average. Any grapes showing evidence of spoilage (browning) should be removed immediately because the spoilage may spread. It is recommended that grapes be placed in a plastic bag to minimize dehydration. Finally, it is advisable to wash them right before serving, and never before.

Harvest 2019

A normal year, with the harvest starting mid August and exports finishing mid-November. Heavy rains during the first 10 days of October have caused high relative humidity in the farms which led to quality issues regarding flesh firmness and texture after mid-October. This season, our company exceed the 1000 tons mark and is steadily increasing its' quantities, including various new red, black and white varieties by Grapa and IFG.
