Grapes’ season: a rewarding challenge
FRUITS
Another Proto Table-Grape season came to an end, and it surely has not been an easy one! The company moved approximately 2000 tons of various Seedless Table-Grapes varieties, both Red and White. Crimson was the main variety handled, with IFG varieties such as Sugar Crisp, Sweet Globe and Jack’s Salute and Grapa varieties such as ARRA15 completing the line-up. Proto utilized it’s multi-thousand Euro investment in a brand-new Marco packing line with a total of 35% of the overall production being packed efficiently in single or mixed color punnets. The largest UK Super-Market chains were the main destination of the Proto grapes, with Brexit still creating difficulties and delays in exports from the EU.
It was surely a difficult season in terms of size and quality, mainly for the Crimson and Grapa varieties. The average Crimson size was significantly smaller than expected with extreme heat affecting the fruit during the better part of Summer and extreme rains affecting the last part of the season, while the Arra varieties showed signs of reduced shelf-life. In any case, Proto has already drawn a roadmap for the 2022 Table-Grapes season to minimize potential issues that could arise from the climate changing and thus the increased difficulty in weather prediction. Table-Grapes are surely a fruit that Proto has and will keep investing in so be on the look-out for our 2022 Table-Grapes season update!
